Ahmed Kelly's journey from an orphanage in Baghdad to becoming a Paralympic swimming star is nothing short of remarkable. Born on November 18, 1991, Ahmed is an Iraqi-born Australian who has made a significant mark in the world of Para-swimming.

Ahmed made his Paralympic debut at the London 2012 Games, and since then, he's competed in three Paralympics, including Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. At the Tokyo Games, Ahmed earned a silver medal in the Men's 150m Individual Medley SM3, a proud moment in his career.

Recently, Ahmed achieved a new milestone at the Para Swimming World Championships in Manchester. He clinched his first-ever gold medal in the men’s 150m Individual Medley SM3 with a time of 2:58.59. Reflecting on his victory, Ahmed said, “Being able to win another gold medal and call myself a world champion once more is a great feeling.”

Ahmed’s path to success wasn’t easy. Born with double below-elbow and above-knee limb loss due to exposure to chemical weapons in utero, Ahmed and his brother Emmanuel spent their early years in an orphanage. Their lives changed dramatically when they were adopted by humanitarian worker Moira Kelly in 1998 and brought to Australia.

Initially introduced to Aussie Rules, Ahmed’s journey took a pivotal turn when he discovered Para-swimming. Nicknamed ‘Nails’ for his tough playing style, Ahmed soon transitioned from Aussie Rules to the pool, where he found his true passion.

At the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships, Ahmed won his first major international medal—a silver in the men’s 150m Individual Medley SM3. This success set the stage for his performance at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, where he finished seventh in the 50m Breaststroke S13 and secured a silver medal in the 150m Individual Medley SM3.

Ahmed's journey is a powerful reminder of resilience and dedication. As he continues to compete and excel, his story inspires many. We look forward to supporting Ahmed in his upcoming swimming events and celebrating his achievements.
